Standoff in Elmira Now Over, No Word Yet on Suspect

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - UPDATE: 2:00 A.M.  Elmira Police confirming to 18 News that an over 10 hour long standoff, involving a mental health situation is now over. 

Police did not release any details surrounding the suspect.  Police are still on the scene.

18 News has received reports of shots fired in Elmira on Tuesday night. 

Around 3 p.m., Elmira Police responded to a mental health situation near the intersection of Oak Street and Washington Avenue.. 

At that time, police were escorting residents to their homes. 

The situation escalated around 6:45 p.m. and shots were fired. Following that, several rounds of flash bang grenades were utilized by law enforcement.

As of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night, Elmira Police, Chemung County Sheriffs, and New York State Police remain at the scene.
