State officials remind residents of burn ban in effect

MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - Officials in New York want to remind you it's brush fire season and the Burn Ban is in effect.

Residential brush fires are allowed most of the year in towns with fewer than 20,000 people. Fires are prohibited in the spring.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says violators of the State's Open Burning Regulation are subject to both criminal and civil action. It can also result in some hefty fines.

Officials say the ban prevents grass and wood fires.

"How the wind is blowing today and when everything gets going, it will be a great problem," William Thomas, the Fire Chief for the Montour Falls Fire Department, said. "So if the wind gets going, you can see the leaves, it will just get out of control very fast."

You can still have a campfire if it's contained within a ring or pit. The ban, which began March 16 remains in effect until mid May.
