ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - June 23, 1972: it was a day that would change Elmira and a day that's still remembered today, the flood of 1972.
It was a day when the streets of Downtown Elmira turned to rivers, whole neighborhoods were strewn with debris, and the following years overshadowed with uncertainty.
The Chemung River overflowed after the region was hammered with heavy rains from Hurricane Agnes.
Those who were here can tell you the extent of the floods and the damage it brought. They also say Elmira was never the same after.
