HOWARD, N.Y. (WETM) - 16 month old Asher Richman needs a kidney transplant.
Asher was born a month early and diagnosed with end stage renal disease. He spent his first 4 months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Rochester . In the weeks and months following his diagnosis, Asher has undergone seven different surgeries and multiple hospital stays.
His parents administer Peritoneal Dialysis, which is used to remove excess fluid and toxins in those with kidney failure. They do this 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
"It's been a challenge," said Asher's father Dave Richman. "Thankfully Asher is our first kid and didn't have any expectations as far as how it was going to be like."
It hasn't been the easiest of years for the family. However, one of the things that has pushed them through these hard times is the communities outreach and support for the gift of life.
"They've done so much, everyone has been so giving," said Asher's mom Mallory Richman.
Asher's father added, "people you don't expect would help out, they open their doors and do what they can, and it's all to help someone out in their community."
At just sixteen months old, Asher still has hurdles to climb. Nevertheless he is cleared for transplant by Boston Children's Hospital. The Richman's are confident that they'll receive the match he needs.
"We have a couple of donors on the list," said Mallory Richman. "If he can't get a live donor, he can always go on the deceased donor list."
To cover with the medical costs, the family is holding a benefit on Saturday April 13 at the Steuben County VFW on State Route 54 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
There will be raffles, as well as live music and a D.J.
