ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS ) - UPDATE: New York State Police say the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the tractor trailer to overturn. The driver is uninjured and was given a traffic violation. All cows had to be put down because of sustained injuries.
A tractor trailer transporting cows to Philadelphia overturned around midnight Friday on Interstate 86 in Chemung County. It happened at the eastbound lane, near the Elmira exit, according to fire officials on the scene.
Around 38 cows were in the truck, 7 escaped, and were wondering on the side of the highway, fire officials told 18 News. Some of the cows did die in the crash, but fire officials didn't have an exact number at the time.
Emergency crews are on the scene working to clear the crash scene. Traffic was backed up as crews shutdown part of the highway for sometime.
No word on a cause of the crash, or if anyone was injured. It was snowing at the time, although weather has not yet been ruled a factor.
