TOWN OF HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - One person was shot and remains in the hospital in critical condition, another suspect is still on the loose after a home invasion goes wrong on the night of January 24th.
During the robbery the suspects, armed with a rifle, demanded cash from the homeowners. A confrontation ensued shortly after between one of the homeowners and one of the suspects Daiquan Bythwood. "During that confrontation the homeowner shot one of the perpetrators." Said Lieutenant Nich DeMuth, "The three perpetrators left the scene in a dark colored sedan."
That dark colored sedan was found at Saint Joseph's hospital in Elmira where Eighteen year old Elmira resident Daiquan Bythwood had been transported by his accomplices, Zhamere Charriez and Drew Stansfield. He was later transferred to Robert Packer Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
Seventeen year old Charriez was detained by Elmira Police, deputies have charged Charriez with one count of robbery in the first degree, a Class B Felony. He has been remanded to the Chemung County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash, $100,000 property bond.
Police are looking for help in locating a third suspect, nineteen year old Drew Stansfield who is believed to have connection to this incident. "He is a Horseheads native." Undersheriff with Chemung County Bill Schrom said, "We believe he was with the other two when they entered the home and certainly want to talk to him in regards to this case."
Stansfield is described as a thin built, white male, who is approximately 5'10" tall with short blonde hair and was last seen wearing dark colored sweatpants and a dark colored long sleeve shirt. Investigators urge the public not to approach the suspect if he is located but instead to contact the Chemung County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division at (607)737-2933 or call 911.
Neighbors to the residence that this incident occurred say they are shocked that something like this would happen in their normally safe and quiet neighborhood.
