Village of Van Etten will no longer be a village

VILLAGE OF VAN ETTEN, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - On the ballot, just one question. That one question determined the fate of the village.

The people have voted to dissolve the village into the town. The resolution passed with a total of 103 yes-votes to 76 no-votes.

Residents such as Carol Daniels said she was set on voting yes since the start because taxes would be lower.

"And we don't need two fire stations," Daniels said. "I hope the village can dissolve and the town could take over."

Lower taxes and emergency services is also what swayed Laverne Daniels to vote yes.

"We hear that whistle blows about 20 times, the one over here," He said. "I think the response time is better over there."

Village residents pay both village and town property taxes. Now, residents would only need to pay the town tax.

Municipal and fire emergency services would also be provided by the town. Not everyone agrees.

"I feel the best representation for the village is from within the village, not from outside the village," Village Mayor Jake Briggs said. "Services would diminish and rates would raise for those that they'd have to make committees for or zones for."

For Patrick Hastings, he cites the local emergency services getting cut and the emergency personnel losing their jobs.

"I would much rather pay more taxes and have a much better community," Hastings said. "It's a nice though to have a fire department. That's actually why me and my wife moved here, is because the fire department was 500 feet away."

Now, a plan will be drafted that details how the town will provide services to residents in the absence of the village. The plan will be drafted within 90 days and presented to residents.
