Virginia woman rescues hundreds of cats since moving to PA

MANSFIELD, Pa. (18 NEWS) - She moved to Pennsylvania in 2013 with hopes of rescuing cats and kittens, but the Virginia woman in Tioga County soon realized it was more than she could handle alone.

The journey hasn't been easy for Lissa Hamilton, who is dedicating a great deal of her time to these animals, but her commitment is saving hundreds of lives.

"I was not prepared for the overwhelming number of abandoned and homeless cats and kittens in Tioga County," Hamilton said.

Having been a foster parent for Cause 4 Paws in Virginia, she thought she'd just jump right back into providing a foster home for cats in Mansfield.

"Much to my dismay, there were no rescue groups in this area, so I thought, 'Okay, I'll just get out of fostering and rescuing and have a few cats and be happy.'"

It wasn't until she realized how big the need was, spending her own money trapping cats then traveling back and forth to and from Virginia to get them adopted.

"In 2015, when I was doing my taxes, I realized, oh my gosh, I have spent way too much money," Hamilton said. "There has got to be a better way to do this."

That's when she looked into expanding Cause 4 Paws in Mansfield operating out of her home. She is now the regional director and her home serves as a branch of the Virginia location.

As a nonprofit, the rescue group is now able to solicit for funds and donations to help offset some of those costs.

She still uses a lot of her own money though for medical expenses, food, and litter, and this isn't even her day job. She puts in roughly 30 hours a week at the local post office but puts in even more time rescuing the animals.

Hamilton is passionate about she what she does and takes in all types of cats from seniors to handicapped.

She's received donated cages and even installed insulation, but it's still not enough to keep up with the demand.

Hamilton and her team have since rescued over 300 cats operating out of six foster homes in Tioga County.
