Wayne County Sheriff's office suspends search for missing 14-month old child

TOWN OF MARION, N.Y. (WSYR) -  Police have called off the exhaustive search for missing 14-month-old Owen Hidalgo-Calderon.

The search on the Joy Road farm in the Town of Marion has been called off after more than two weeks.

Over 1,000 searchers tried to find missing 14-month-old Owen Hidalgo-Calderon. They focused their efforts on the farm where the body of Owen's mother, Selena Hidalgo-Calderon, was found buried in the woods nearby.

Despite the suspension of the search, police say they are not completely giving up on the investigation.

Officers add that after looking at hundred of acres of land, the chance that baby Owen is still on this farm is small but not impossible.

On Friday, police say they began looking at other areas in neighboring towns, but would not reveal what, if anything, was found in those locations.

"I will say that I am disappointed. This is not from lack of effort. Every agency, every first responder discipline that's been here, our logistics, our search, the cooperation, the collaboration, the partnerships of all the agencies working together has been phenomenal. We have just not found Owen. That is disappointing," said Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts.

Investigators are still waiting on the results of Selena Hidalgo-Calderon's death, but her boyfriend, Alberto Reyes, remains the main suspect.

Reyes has been charged with Tampering with Evidence in connection to this case. He also faces separate charges of illegal re-entry into the country. He is scheduled to appear in Federal court on Monday.
