World Aids Day 2018

ELMIRA, N.Y. - In 1988, Dr. Jonathan Mann created World Aids Day. Now, 30 years later, it is still celebrated world wide. December 1st marks World Aids Day every year, and in Elmira, multiple events were held to commemorate the international day.

At the Steele Memorial Library in Elmira, members of the community were welcomed to a panel discussion to learn more about those who live with, and are effected by HIV/AIDS. Mayor Dan Mandell delivered a proclamation, officially declaring it World Aids Day in the city of Elmira.

A little over 50 people attended the event. The goal was to dispel rumors about the virus and allow people to freely ask questions that help eliminate stigmas associated with HIV/AIDS. There were also panel discussions held at Elmira High School and Elmira College.
