Rookie Phillips drinking from Bills’ deep well of DL experience

Josh Allen was drafted to be the future of the franchise at the most important position in football.

Tremaine Edmunds was selected to be the centerpiece of the linebacker corps.

Along the defensive line, Harrison Phillips will hopefully develop into the anchor up front.

“Thatta way Harry! That’s your drill! That’s who you are Harry!” a defensive coach yelled as Phillips tossed a sled with ease during minicamp practice on Wednesday.

“So much of my motivation is to prove them right,” Phillips said.  “31 teams did happen to pass on me in the draft, but that’s not the motivation. It’s the motivation that one team did choose me. They took enough faith and trust to choose me and so just trust them and really let them know who Harrison Phillips can be.”

The former Stanford standout has two of the best defensive tackles in the league to learn from in Kyle Williams and Star Lotulelei. They want to see him succeed, too.

“I think he’s come in and try to be a sponge. You get young guys in and maybe you hear them more than you see them,” Williams said after practice on Wednesday.

“I’m trying to pour into him to help him be the best. The better we can make him, the better our team will be now and in the future. I’m going to be a Buffalo Bill forever. Hopefully, I can watch him go on and on and on.”

Phillips admitted that, while playing at Stanford, he and his teammates flew under the radar. However in Buffalo, the defensive tackle and his fellow rookies have already started to make their mark in the community. Before minicamp began, they even stopped to take wedding photos outside the facility.

“It’s cool to go out in the community, sitting at dinner, and people say that’s so and so and you get up and take pictures,” he said. “It feels good just to know somebody supports you that much. I want to prove these amazing people I’ve met and shook hands with right.”
