JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — New York Waterway is modifying some service after Coast Guard inspectors found 23 of its 32 ferries “operationally unfit.”

The company on Monday is operating modified service on eight routes between New Jersey and New York City. Seven other routes are operating under normal schedules.

In a statement, the Coast Guard says it discovered damage and discrepancies “significant enough to warrant suspension of service.” The Coast Guard did not elaborate.

New York Waterway says eight ferries were re-inspected and returned to service on Sunday.
