Carolina defeats Elmira in OT to win Commissioner’s Cup


The Elmira Enforcers were just one goal away from forcing a game five in the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

The Carolina Thunderbirds defeated the Enforcers in overtime 4-3 in game four of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Saturday to win an FHL Championship.

The Thunderbirds win the series 3-1 and win the Commissioner’s Cup.

Mitch Atkins scored a goal for Elmira in the second period to give the Enforcers a 2-1 lead.

Goals in the third period by Jan Salak and Petr Panacek put the Thunderbirds in front 3-2.

The Enforcers rallied late as Nathan Pelligra scored a goal for Elmira with under five minutes to go to tie the game at 3 and the goal would send the game to overtime.

Salak put in a rebound 35 seconds into overtime on a power-play for the game-winner for the Thunderbirds.

Nick Niedert made 43 saves in goal for Elmira.

In their inaugural season, the Elmira Enforcers became the first Elmira pro hockey team to make it to a championship series since 2004.
