Cassel Expects QB Duel at Bills Training Camp

Until the Bills find their franchise quarterback, there will continue to be competitions for the starting job during training camp at St. John Fisher in Pittsford.

At his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Matt Cassel said he anticipated a QB duel with EJ Manuel this summer.

It’s the second time in three seasons that the Bills will enter training camp without an established starting quarterback.

“You have to earn every opportunity that you get. I know that there is going to be competition and I know that EJ (Manuel) is here,” said Cassel. “He is a young, talented player.

The Bills acquired Cassel along with a 2015 sixth-round pick via a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. In return, Buffalo will send a 2015 fifth-round pick (from Tampa) and an undisclosed pick reported to be a 2016 seventh-rounder.

Cassel’s 2014 season was cut short because of a broken foot in Week 3. He says the foot is fully healed and that he passed his physical with the Bills.

“I’ve been doing everything that I can,” said the 32-year old. “I’ve been dropping back and throwing and everything else, so my foot does feel great.”

It’s been a long time since Cassel went 10-5 as the Patriots starting quarterback in 2008. Over the last six seasons, his record as a starting QB is 23-33 with 73 touchdowns and 57 interceptions.
