HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – Two years up, two years down as champions.
The Corning-Painted Post 9/10 All-Stars claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Big Flats Sunday, winning their second consecutive NYS District 6 Championship. Corning-Painted Post (6-2) now advances to Sectionals at Maine-Endwell on Tuesday night.
Carter West had the lone RBI on a single in the fourth inning which would prove to be the game-winner for Corning-Painted Post, who avenged an early All-Star season loss to Big Flats. On June 25th, Big Flats (7-1) ousted Corning-Painted Post, 16-2.
In perhaps the most dramatic play of the night and maybe of All-Star play Sunday, C-PP’s Elijah Hutter threw out the potential tying run in the 5th inning from left field. It was a touch-and-go play, where catcher Landen Speciale initially had possession of the throw at home plate, then subsequently lost control as Big Flats’ Preston Miller slid into him. Speciale quickly regained control before Miller was able to touch the plate for the out presevering the lead.
In the 10/12 All-Star division on Sunday, Horseheads beat Hornell 7-4 and Corning-Painted Post topped Big Flats 10-0. Horseheads will now play Corning-Painted Post at 6 pm on Tuesday night in the 10/12 District 6 Championship.
