A local standout baseball player is taking the ultimate step in his coaching career.
Jeff Mathers, a graduate of Elmira Free Academy, has been in the minor league system for the Detroit Tigers for years. After a successful run in Toledo, the Tigers Triple-A affiliate, Mathers got the call to work with Detroit’s Major League Baseabll (MLB) team as a strength and conditioning coach.
Mathers will work with the best in the franchise to help the Tigers prepare for the final few weeks of the regular season. After a solid career as a player, which saw Mathers sign with D-I Manhattan College for the Jaspers and then playing at Ithaca College, Mathers traveled to Cleveland over the weekend as the Tigers faced the Indians.
18 Sports spoke with Mathers Monday night and discussed what the city of Elmira gave to him on his quest to work in professional baseball.
