ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – 18 Sports extends its sympathy for the Rankins family.

Late Tuesday night, local coaching fixture, Maurice Rankins, suddenly passed away after suffering a heart attack. Rankins, who was a staple for decades on the local sports scene, leaves behind a lasting legacy of helping others in their respective sports.

Rankins coached the Elmira Notre Dame girls basketball team in the early part of the decade and also coached several aspiring athletes in travel athletics for many years.

Rankins was just 50 years old.

In 2014, in an interview with Rankins, he provided us with a very profound quote. It reads: “Be grateful for what God has given you and strive to be the best you can become. Because that is the gift.”

It was a gift and an honor to meet and know Maurice Rankins. All of us at WETM-TV offer our condolences for this untimely passing.
