Hornell Football’s Werner Wins Coach of The Year

Sports

Hornell football will gear up for Saturday’s regional game with an award-winning coach.

Erik Werner was named Section V Class B Coach of The Year at the classification’s end of the year banquet on Tuesday. Werner, who took over for the legendary Gene Mastin after Hornell won three consecutive state championships in 2012, has led the Red Raiders to a perfect (10-0) record.

On Saturday, the 4th ranked Red Raiders will look to take down 10th ranked Cheektowaga (9-1) Saturday at 4 pm at SUNY Brockport. Hornell is coming off its first Section V Class B title since 2012,  a 22-20 win over Livonia last Saturday. The Red Raiders have played to a much higher level this year than year’s past, and they would like nothing more than to roll into the Final 4 with a big win.

18 Sports previews Saturday’s game with coach Werner, who talks about their strategy going into Brockport.
