Corning Mayor Bill Boland honored the state champion Corning Hawks softball team on Monday at Corning-Painted Post High School.

The Hawks won their first Class AA state title in program history earlier this month with a 4-3 win against Cicero-North Syracuse in eleven innings in South Glens Falls.

The team was also named a NYS Scholar Athlete Team which Mayor Boland says is important.

“This is a scholar athlete team and that’s extremely important.  Not only did they accomplish on the field but also in the classroom,” said Mayor Boland.

Being a NYS Scholar Athlete Team signifies that the team’s GPA for 75% of the roster is equal to or greater than 90%.

Corning head coach Mike Johnston says being honored by Mayor Boland means a lot to the team.

“It’s quite an honor.  I mean the whole community has really bought into the accomplishment that these kids have made, and we’re proud of them,” said Johnston.
