A major decision is coming for the Edison football program.
After months of research and community feedback, the Spartans could drop to eight-man football and break away from the traditional 11-man game. This comes in response to low turnout numbers and school mergers throughout the country and state. A trend that has even hit the Twin Tiers.
Last year, Elmira Notre Dame, who participates in the same Section IV classification as Edison in C, dropped to the eight-man game and had instant success. The Crusaders won the Section IV Class C title and enjoyed the faster-paced action.
This upcoming Wednesday, the Elmira Heights School District will hold a meeting to determine if the Spartans will decide to play eight-man. Edison athletic director, Mike Bennett, says that through considerable time and effort about the potential change, the community will have their rightful say on the right decision moving forward.
Edison won just two games last season but did rack up a (4-5) overall record two years ago-the most wins in the program since 2007. 18 Sports interviews Bennett on what the next steps could potentially be for the program.
