Elmira Pioneers Expect Big Things in 2018

Season preview from media day

ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 SPORTS) - The Elmira Pioneers are primed for a big time season at Dunn Field.

Action for the 2018 season begins Friday night when Newark comes to town at 7:05 pm. This year, manager Matt Burch returns after a one-year hiatus to coach the team.  Burch managed the Pioneers to a 2006 playoff berth, the 2007 NYCBL Championship, and the 2013 West Division Championship.

The team is brining in some promising, young division I college talent ranging from UConn, to Kentucky, to Alabama, and even Quebec, Canada after a 27-23 campaign last season.

The Pioneers will showcase their fair share of local players as well.

Chase Austin, the Tioga, PA native, is returning for his second season with the Pioneers after posting a 2-2 record with a 4.60 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 29.1 innings last summer.  Billy Gregory joins the team after some solid outings with Mansfield University this spring, and Kipper Hillson who just finished his senior season at North Penn-Mansfield HS will step on to Dunn Field for the first time, following in the footsteps of his brother, Taylor, who played for the Pios for three seasons.

Lastly, Danny Madden from Corning will make his debut after his first year at Polk State where he played in 21 games, pitching 33.2 innings.

Tomorrow's opening night game will be followed with a fireworks show.  It's time for baseball at Dunn Field.
