ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 SPORTS) - The Elmira Pioneers, the hometown team from the PGCBL, signed three big names for 2018.
On Tuesday, the Pios announced the signing of three players from The University of Kentucky. All three are finishing up their freshman seasons for the Wildcats. Two pitchers, Mason Hazelwood and Jimmy Ramsey, along with outfielder Tanner Johnson.
Hazelwood, a 6’5”, 200-pound, left handed pitcher, hails from Salvisa, Kentucky. Mason was a two time All-State selection. The big pitcher has impressed his coaches and has had 13 appearances this spring with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings. Hazelwood throws in the low 90 MPH range, and looks to be a key role in the Pioneers starting rotation.
An even bigger right-handed pitcher is Jimmy Ramsey, the 6’7”, 240-pounder is from Minnetonka, Minnesota. Jimmy has had 19 appearances this spring with 27 strikeouts in just 24 innings.
Johnson is a 6’2”, 200-pound, catcher/outfielder from Crestwood, Kentucky. Tanner was a two-time All-State selection and is an outstanding athlete. Tanner has been red-shirted this spring due to Kentucky having two upper class catchers. Tanner will see a lot of time behind the plate for the Pios this summer and will be a great addition to the team.
“We are really excited to have three quality players from Kentucky (currently ranked 14th in the nation), they will be great additions to the Pioneers Manager Matt Burch said in a press release. The Pioneers start the 2018 season June 1st when they host the Newark Pilots at 7:05 pm.
Don't forget the 4th Annual Elmira Pioneers Hot Stove Dinner on Thursday, April 26th at The Holiday Inn. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with special guest, Red Sox legend, Bill Buckner.
