For the first time ever, two Horseheads wrestling greats met.
Devin Woodworth, who’s up for the Twin Tiers Sports Awards Moment of The Year, broke the school’s all-time wins mark at the New York State Tournament in Albany when he recorded his 173rd victory in February. Woodworth capped off his storied career with a fourth-place finish at states and will now take his talents to the Coast Guard Academy next year.
The man who owned that record for nearly 20 years, is former middleweight, Ricky Webster. Considered by many as the most gifted wrestler in school history, Webster won 170 wins in his time for the Blue Raiders and won multiple Section IV and Class A championships. Webster graduated from Horseheads in 2000 after one of the greatest careers in local wrestling history.
On Wednesday, Woodworth and Webster met and discussed the sport, the wins mark and what Horseheads wrestling has given them both as they look for sustained success in the future.
Before Woodworth topped Webster’s mark this past year, former Blue Raider standout, Gus Gorman, was the all-time wins record-holder at Horseheads.
