Horseheads Boys Soccer Falls in States

Blue Raiders storied run comes to an end

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (18 SPORTS) - The storied season for the Horseheads boys soccer team came to a closing halt Wednesday.

In a first-round New York State Class AA Soccer Tournament game at Middletown High School, the Blue Raiders dropped a tough 1-0 game to unbeaten Monroe-Woodbury. Chris Ryan scored the lone-goal of the night for Monroe Woodbury (18-0), the state's second-ranked team in Class AA.

Horsheads (7-6-4), fresh off their first Section IV title in 19 years, was unable to connect in the cage all night. Thursday night's win was the eighth straight shutout for Monroe-Woodbury, who advances to the regional final on Saturday night at 7 PM vs. Section 1's Ketcham in Middletown.

The Blue Raiders battled all night, much like their previous two playoff games, but could not convert. Horseheads outlasted state-ranked and top-seeded Elmira in the Section IV Class AA semis 1-0, then, topped Ithaca in penalty kicks on Monday night, 4-3.
