It was a night of firsts in Mansfield for summer college league baseball.

The Mansfield Destroyers, playing in their first New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) game, beat visiting Hornell, 8-5, for their first-ever win. It was a hard fought victory for Mansfield, who tied the game up at five in the bottom of the fourth inning on the campus of Mansfield University.

Sayre grad Matt Williams, who now plays at St. Bonaventure, went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI on the night to lead Mansfield (1-0). Andrew Littlefield had a double and two runs batted in for Hornell (0-1).

Brandon Quigley picked up the victory for Mansfield who threw two innings of work with one strikeout. Quigley was one of five total pitchers who took the mound on Thursday for the Destroyers.

Mansfield next plays Friday on the road at Olean at 10:30 am.
