Mike Weaver signs with National Arena League

Local Sports

A local football standout continues to fight for the ultimate dream.

Last month, Elmira native Mike Weaver was released by the Baltimore Brigade of the Arena Football League (AFL). Weaver’s untimely release was due to a foot injury, leaving him without a professional team to play for. Now, Mike has landed on his feet and keeps his professional football dreams alive.

The two-time All-ACC kicker out of Wake Forest, who last played for the Demon Deacons in 2017, signed with the Massachusetts Pirates of the National Arena League (NAL). Weaver has played in three games already for the Pirates, connecting on 17 of 24 extra point attempts, the team is based in Worcester.

After his successful run at Wake Forest, Weaver was in contact with several NFL teams and was listed as a top undrafted free agent by NFL.com. Weaver then tried out for the now-defunct Alliance of American Football League before landing with the AFL and now NAL.

Weaver tells 18 Sports that he is enjoying his time for the Pirates and is staying in the kicking game, simply getting better with each rep he’s given.

18 Sports will continue to follow Weaver’s progress in the pro ranks and update the Twin Tiers on his career as it develops.
