Tioga wrestling sends big four to states

Four Tioga wrestlers are ready to leave their mark this weekend in Albany.

Brothers Brady and John Worthing along with Austin Lamb in the middleweights, plus, 285-pounder Steven Taylor will all try to take home state gold Friday and Saturday at the New York State Wrestling Championships. Action in D-II begins Friday with the finals commencing on Saturday night. 

Here’s a quick breakdown of each Tioga wrestler, followed by a schedule courtesy of the NYSPHSAA: 

Brady Worthing (36-4) – 132-pounds, Junior – Will compete as the #4 seed, first match versus Joe McIntosh (29-11), a senior from Gouverneur, placed second in the state last season at 120-pounds. 

John Worthing (35-3) – 138-pounds, Senior – Receives bye in first round as #2 seed, will then face winner of #7 seed Greg Hotaling (36-5) from Cobleskill-Richmondville or Nick Ross (43-3) of Onteora both sophomores. Worthing was a state-runner up in 2016 at 99-pounds, placed third in the state in 2017, did not compete in states last year due to an illness.

Austin Lamb (42-1) – 145-pounds, Senior – #3 seeded wrestler will face sophomore Will Carano (23-6) of Putnam Valley-Haldane in the first round. Placed fifth in the state last year, sixth place two years ago. 

Steven Taylor (30-6) – 285-pounds, Senior –  #4 seed, faces Christia Salvio (31-3), a senior from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk in the first round.
