WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira native Mike Weaver had a flair for the dramatic Friday night.
Weaver, the starting kicker for the Massachusetts Pirates of the National Arena League (NAL), connected on a game-winning 60-yard field goal as time expired in a 54-52 win over New York. It was the longest field goal in Pirates franchise history and Weaver’s successful kick clinched a playoff spot for Massachusetts (7-4).
“That was amazing, all glory to God,” Weaver said in a post-game interview with the Pirates. Weaver believes that his strength and faith helps propel him to another level on and off the field.
“Allowing me to play this beautiful game, just allowing me to make that kick for my team, God I love you.”
On the season, Weaver is now 3-for-6 on field goals, plus, 39-of-48 on extra points against the much more narrow goal posts in the league. Weaver currently leads the league in points per game with nine.
The two-time All-ACC selection out of Wake Forest continues his football journey and is fighting for the next big opportunity of his career.
Listed as a top undrafted free agent on NFL.com following his senior year at Wake Forest, and a Lou Groza Watch List player, Weaver keeps capitalizing on every shot he’s been given.
Stick with 18 Sports on the next steps of Weaver’s journey as it develops. The Pirates will next host the top team in the NAL, Jacksonville (10-1), at 7 pm next Saturday in Worchester. The game can be watched live on the National Arena League YouTube channel.
