Sports

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – It’s a special era, perhaps one of the best ever, in Twin Tiers Sports.

Elmira native Johnny Beecher, just two weeks ago, was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the first-round of the NHL Draft. The big news for the Team USA player and Michigan Wolverines commit came just weeks after Horseheads grad Mikey Limoncelli was drafted by the Seattle Mariners at pitcher in the sixth-round of the MLB Draft.

On top of that, Elmira native Mike Weaver continues to play professional football in the National Arena League (NAL) in Massachusetts where he leads the league in average points per game. Weaver was a two-time All-ACC kicker out of Wake Forest and set the school’s single-season scoring mark as a senior in 2017.

18 Sports spoke with Beecher on the eve of the NHL Draft to discuss the talent push that has exploded on the professional level in 2019. Three determined athletes who are driven by their love of their respective games. Three athletes who have made Elmira sports history.

Hear Beecher’s thoughts on the future for each standout professional player from the Twin Tiers.
