Middle Tennessee State 30……..Syracuse 23

Scott Shafer’s return to the Dome was a successful one, as Middle Tennessee State shocked Syracuse, pulling out a 30-23 win over the Orange.

Shafer, now the defensive coordinator for the Blue Raiders held his former quarterback Eric Dungey to just 180 yards passing.

As a team Syracuse managed only 308 yards against Shafer’s defense, committing two turnovers and giving up a safety.

After a sluggish start, SU would find the end zone early in the second quarter on a 4th down touchdown run from Dontae Strickland.

Syracuse added two field goals to take a 16-9 lead late in the third quarter.

Middle Tennessee answered with 14 straight points, as junior quarterback Brent Stockstill tossed a pair of touchdowns.

With 11 minutes to play in the game, Eric Dungey scampered 29 yards to tie the game at 23.

Middle Tennessee would march 75 yards in 10 plays, as Stockstill found Shane Tucker for the game winning touchdown.

Side Notes:

Syracuse senior wide receiver Steve Ishmael hauled in a game-high 14 receptions for 116 yards.

Junior safety Antwan Cordy (who did not play today) was seen on crutches and his ankle wrapped before the game.  Cordy suffered a lower body injury last week against Central Connecticut State.

Eric Dungey was knocked out of the game in the third quarter, after suffering a late hit to the head.  Dungey did return and finished the game.
