The Syracuse University men’s basketball team will head into conference play on the heels of three straight wins.
The Orange capped off the streak with an 80-67 win over a Mike Davis-coached Texas Southern team Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
After starting the season 6-0 and earning a spot in both polls following wins over nationally ranked UConn and Texas A&M, the Orange struck a rough patch that saw the team lose three of four games.
Mike Hopkins – coaching in place of Jim Boeheim, who is sitting out a nine-game suspension – received a workmanlike performance from the Orange.
Michael Gbinije led SU with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Dajuan Coleman scored 14 and also hauled in seven rebounds.
Trevor Cooney rounded out SU’s leaders with 14 points.
Derrick Griffin led the Tigers with 20 points.
The Orange improved to 10-3 on the season, while Texas Southern fell to 1-10.
SU will travel to Pittsburgh for its ACC opener on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m.
