Peterman “thankful” for another opportunity

Nathan Peterman could be in line to make his fourth career start on Sunday when the Bills host the Bears at New Era Field.

“It’s another game and I’m thankful for another opportunity if that’s the case and ready to go out and perform,” the quarterback said Wednesday.

“Confidence is a challenge for every athlete, every performer out there. To keep one’s confidence high is also a challenge, and that’s where the mental toughness of the game comes in,” head coach Sean McDermott said when asked about any reservations or concerns about the QB’s confidence.

“We have resources in our building that assist us in those areas in order to keep confidence high, whether it’s with Nate or other players or coaches. That’s an important aspect of developing the total athlete.”

McDermott added he’s “confident” in the quarterback.

However, the results haven’t been kind to Peterman in his career.  In 84 career attempts, which includes his three passes in the playoffs, he has thrown 10 interceptions.

“It’s a wild bag, honestly,” Peterman said of his struggles on the field.  “Each one has their own story and own lessons from it. I think that’s the biggest thing; I’ve taken a lot of those lessons and I’ve learned from them. Moving forward, really the goal is to learn from them and be better.”

The second year quarterback originally won the starting job with his strong performances throughout the preseason.  Those results haven’t translated to regular season success.

Peterman was benched after throwing for 24 yards and two interceptions in the opener against the Ravens and then returned to the field in Houston, throwing a touchdown before a pick-6 in the loss to the Texans.

“I think [it’s] opportunities and chances that it goes one way,” he added.  “It’s football; you can’t predict how it’s going to go. The ball doesn’t bounce your way sometimes and you have to go ahead and move forward and learn from the mistakes and move on.”
