It’s a big time weekend for area wrestlers chasing dreams.
The Section IV Division I and II Wrestling Championships begin on Friday and commence on Saturday. The D-I tourney will be held at Union-Endicott high school on Saturday only and will feature local teams Corning, Elmira and Horseheads.
Action begins in Endicott at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled to start close to 4:30 p.m. A bracket to watch for is 132-pounds with three-time defending Section IV champion, Horseheads Devin Woodworth (38-1). Standing in his way for a school record fourth title, is best friend and Corning’s Drew Witham (24-1). The two battled each other all season, each securing one victory against the other.
Woodworth recently won 3-1 for the STAC Championship, while Witham scored the dual meet win by the same score in January. These two will likely meet in the finals, with the winner going to states.
In Division II, the tournament begins on Friday at 5 p.m. and then the finals will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Windsor. Plenty of area teams are in the hunt for a championship and their bid to states, that list includes the Worthing brothers, Brady (31-4) and John (33-2), at 132 and 138-pounds respectively. The Worthing’s are the top seed in their weights along with teammate, Austin Lamb (38-1), at 145-pounds.
