Tyus Battle returns from last week’s back injury to lead the Orange past Maryland in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
It was considered the first big test of the season for the Orange and they passed it with flying colors. Syracuse edged Maryland 72-70 on Monday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Tyus Battle hit a go-ahead three-pointer with one minute to go to give SU the lead for good at 68-66. Battle finished with a team-high 18 points. Kevin Huerter, a graduate of Shenendehowa High School near Albany, led all scorers for Maryland with 23 points including seven made three-pointers on nine attempts.
Aside from Battle, three other SU players finished in double figures. Frank Howard and Oshae Brissett both recorded double-doubles. Howard went for 15 points and 10 assists, to go along with seven steals. Brissett also finished with 15 points and chipped in with 13 rebounds. Marek Dolezaj again made the most of his minutes. Dolezaj scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
Syracuse grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and finished with 42 points in the paint compared to just 20 points in the paint for the Terps. Next up for the 6-0 Orange is Saturday’s showdown with #3 Kansas down in Miami.
