SU's rally falls short on the road at Florida State, 27-24

The Orange still look for its first road win of 2017

TALLAHASSEE, F. L. (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse drops its second straight game on the road, falling to Florida State 27-24. SU had a chance to tie, but Cole Murphy missed a 43-yard field goal with no time left.

The Orange looked headed for a long day when Eric Dungey not only threw an interception to end the Orange's first drive but then left the game with a lower-body injury and would not return until early in the second quarter.

Once back in the game, Dungey connected with Jamal Custis on a 47-yard touchdown to bring the Orange to within 14-7. The Seminoles answered right back with a 63-yard touchdown run from Cam Akers to put FSU back up 21-7. Akers finished the game with 199 yards on the ground.

Two possessions later, SU drove back down the field and Dungey connected with Steve Ishmael on a 35-yard pass to cut the lead back to deficit 7. Murphy would connect on a 42-yard field goal to put the Orange within four, 21-17, but two straight field goals from Ricky Aguayo pushed the Seminoles lead back to 10.

The Orange answered on its next drive with a three-yard touchdown run from Dungey to make it 27-24. The Orange nearly got the ball back on its own 44-yard line, but an overturned James Blackmon fumble resulted in an FSU punt. SU started its final drive from its own 18-yard line before coming up short.

Dungey finished the game going 23-43 for 278 passing yards, 109 rushing yards, and three total TDS. Ervin Phillips is now the Syracuse career receptions leader with 12 catches for 107 yards. His seventh catch of the game moved him ahead of Alec Lemon who set the mark at 201 between 2009-12. Phillips has 73 catches this season and 207 for his career.

The Orange return to the Dome next week to face Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 11.
