Syracuse to honor 1959 national championship team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WETM) – Syracuse football’s first and only team to win a national championship will be honored at the Carrier Dome this season.

The 1959 national championship team will be honored on their 60th anniversary on Saturday, September 14th when the Orange host defending national champs Clemson. Elmira’s Ernie Davis was a star running back on the 1959 team. The 1959 Orange went 11-0 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl 23-14.

Davis, nicknamed “The Elmira Express”, would go on to become the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Davis also twice earned first-team All-American honors at Syracuse.

Davis passed away from leukemia in 1963 at 23 years old.
