Waverly wins fourth straight Section IV girls golf title


The Waverly girls golf team continued its dominance on the greens.

Waverly, who came into Tuesday’s Section IV championship with 118 consecutive match wins, secured their fourth-straight Section IV team title at Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Pine Valley. The Wolverines hit a 384 overall and will send three to the New York State Golf Championships in Deerfield next weekend. 

Waverly’s Alex Tomasso shot an 85, which was good for third place in the tournament, punching her ticket to states. Teammate Sidney Tomasso scored a 93 for fifth place and Gabby Picco hit a 93 for sixth to secure a spot in the state tournament. 

Corning’s Lucia Chen (88) finished in fourth place, Horseheads Emily Legare was seventh (103) and Corning’s Hannah Masaki (105) rounded out the top place-winners who will compete at states from the region. 

Horseheads Brooklyn Moffe (108) and Ava Fairbrother (110) were selected as the two alternates for states. The Blue Raiders finished second as a team with a 434 while Corning was third in the final standings shooting a 444.

Unadilla Valley’s Bailey Shoemaker was the individual Section IV champion with a final round score of 74. 

The New York State Girls Golf Championship begins on Saturday, June 1st in Deerfield at Deerfield Country Club in Brockport.
