For the first time in 65 years, WETM-TV Sports has earned a special honor.
WETM-TV, which hit the airwaves in 1953, earned a prestigious Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Sports Reporting. The 2019 honor is for a feature story on Elmira basketball standout and Syracuse University-bound, Kiara Fisher, who plays the game in honor of her late father. Delmar Fisher passed away after battling complications with diabetes.
The story, which won Region 11 of the country (New York, Pennsylvania & New Jersey), earns the right to compete at the National Murrow Competition for best sports story in the nation. The national event winners will be revealed in June. There’s a total of 14 regions (winners) in the United States who will compete for the top honor.
The regional win for WETM-TV Sports is the first in station history and the very first Edward R. Murrow win in Elmira television market history. WETM-TV Sports dedicates this award to the honor and memory of Delmar Fisher and the entire Twin Tiers community.
