LYON, FRANCE (WETM) Soccer fans in Lyon, France and all over the world who watched the final match of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup witnessed the moment the USA Women’s National Team won their fourth title.
The final match was between the USA and the Netherlands where the US WNT defeated the Netherlands, 2-0. One of those was Julie Fielding, a soccer fan from Elmira who saw the game up close in Lyon.
“It was just a sense of adrenaline, it just rushed through your veins because everyone is so excited to be there and cheer on the team,” Fielding said.
It was an exciting moment for fans across the United States. It was also a historic moment that Fielding said was a moment she will remember.
“It’s hard to describe because it’s kind of that you-need-to-be-here to feel the energy and to understand what it’s like,” Fielding said. “It was one of those moments that I think none of us girls will ever forget.”
Fielding went with some of her friends, but just for the final match. Some of her other friends were already there, attending the USAWNT’s last few games.
Fielding was on a trip across Europe and decided to make a stop in Lyon. Not only was she with her friends, but she also with the U.S. fan base.
“The experience being in France, walking down the street with other people from the United States,” Fielding explained, “high-fiving each other, smiling, it’s just great energy and positivity that we’ll be bringing back with us to the States.”
Among the Dutch fans, there did not seem to be any animosity.
“The Dutch fans were very nice,” She said. “We didn’t specifically make friends, but definitely smiles, good games, and exchanges the way.”
When the final whistle blew, the USA were Women’s World Cup champions! Fielding said she had a feeling it was going to happen.
“Our team of 23 girls are very talented,” She said. “We all knew they would bring home the trophy and win the cup.”
The U.S. Men’s National Team were also in a final match against Mexico in the Gold Cup Final. Fielding said she rooted for the Men’s team. Unfortunately, they lost 1-0.
