It is now official that we experienced our first heat wave of the summer!
A heat wave occurs when there are a consecutive amount of days in row where temperatures reach 90° or higher. Here in Elmira the criteria for a heat wave is three days, which is recorded at the Airport
Thanks to a warm air mass that was situated over our region this past week, it provided us with extremely warm and humid afternoons. High temperatures leading up to our heat wave topped out in the upper 80s, just shy of 90°, although the humidity made it feel much hotter.
Our official high temperature today at the Elmira Airport was 91°, which is the third day of highs above 90°. On Friday afternoon the high was 93° and yesterday’s high was 92°.
Luckily, we will be seeing an end to this oppressive heat and humidity this week. A cold front passage late Sunday night and into Monday will bring us a much needed relief. Highs this week will start off in the low to mid 70s before warming back into the low 80s by the end of the week!
