Wind Chill Advisory in effect Friday evening until Saturday afternoon

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued the following weather alerts:

…WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM FRIDAY TO 1 PM SATURDAY…

  • WHAT…Very cold wind chills expected. Wind chills as low as 15
    to 20 below zero.
  • WHERE…In Pennsylvania, Southern Wayne, Bradford, Susquehanna, Pike, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming and Northern Wayne counties. In New York, Tompkins, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, Broome, Yates, Seneca and Southern Cayuga counties.
  • IMPACTS…The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS…In addition to the bitterly cold wind chills overnight, temperatures on Saturday are expected to only warm to between 10 to 15 degrees and then quickly fall back to near zero overnight Sunday night. This will be a prolonged period under very cold conditions. This could lead to pipes freezing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

  • WHAT…Very cold wind chills expected. Wind chills as low as 20 below zero early Saturday.
  • WHERE…Portions of central Pennsylvania.
  • IMPACTS…The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Air temperatures during much of the period will be in the single digits above zero, but will drop to between zero and 5 below zero in some of the perennial cold spots around daybreak Saturday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Limit time outside. Dress in layers and cover exposed skin. Wear a hat and gloves. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken.
