Affordable Green Bean Casserole With Options

8 cups precooked green beans, fresh, frozen, or canned
2 cups caramelized onions, divided
2 10.5 oz. cans cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional
1/2 cup crumbled bacon, optional
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. thyme
1 tsp. granulated garlic
2 cups crushed crackers
2 cups French fried onions, optional

Basic Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the soup, milk, half of the onion, cheese, bacon, and seasonings in a large bowl. Stir until well combined. Now, add the precooked green beans and fold together until all of the green beans are well coated. Pour into a greased casserole dish and Bake for 24-35 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with the French fried onions and return to the oven for an additional 8-10 minutes.
If the French fried onions are not in the budget, here is a slick hack that will cost only pennies and give the same flavor profile.
Take the second cup of caramelized onions and mix them with 2 cups crushed crackers. Place the mixture on a lined cookie sheet and toast under the broiler for about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature. Use this mixture instead of those pricey French fried onions and amaze your family and friends.
